Protect Workers’ Rights. NO on Prop 22.
The fight for workers’ rights is on the ballot in California. Equal Rights Advocates strongly opposes California Proposition 22. This Proposition will allow app companies like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, and Postmates to pay gig workers — 78% of whom are people of color— less than minimum wage. Prop 22 would deny workers paid sick days, proper safety equipment, protection from discrimination and harassment, and more.
Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, and Postmates are spending more than $185 million promoting Prop 22, framing it as legislation that will benefit workers by offering them “historic” new benefits. Why? Because the companies stand to pocket tens of millions of dollars every year by cheating their workers out of wages, benefits, and protections.
Here’s what they don’t want you to know: In reality, Prop 22 would deregulate the industries app-based delivery and transportation companies operate in, eviscerating worker protections and preventing state and local governments from being able to do anything about it.
This is a new low, especially for companies that recently claimed to “stand for racial justice.” The Movement for Black Lives calls for the very type of worker organizing that Prop 22 would make almost impossible.
In addition to our organization, others who vocally oppose Prop 22 include: Black Lives Matter, Gig Workers Rising, Human Rights Watch, Dolores Huerta, the ACLU, SEIU, California Labor Federation, the Editorial Boards of the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Fresno Bee, and many more.
Join us in voting NO on Proposition 22 on November 3. Linked here are the top 10 reasons to vote NO on Prop 22. Bottom line, Prop 22 harms people of color first and worst; it leaves workers vulnerable to COVID-19; and it rolls back rights for women.
Let’s come together as part of a movement for workers’ rights.
