Statement by Noreen Farrell, Executive Director of Equal Rights Advocates (ERA), which fights for gender justice in workplaces and schools across the country:

The Senate’s historic confirmation today of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court is a well-deserved and long overdue step into a future where the diversity of our nation is reflected in the highest court.

Throughout the confirmation hearings, Judge Jackson displayed her willingness to defend constitutional and civil rights, as well as the important precedent interpreting both.  These rights are more important than ever for reproductive healthcare equality, education access, labor rights, disability rights, and LGBTQI+ equality.

Representation matters. Having a Black woman on our highest Court is an important step forward in this country’s model of inclusive democracy. Black women have always led our nation’s progress toward equity and social justice, and it is high time for a Black woman to sit in a position of power that reflects that history of leadership.

Judge Jackson has exceptional credentials, unimpeachable character, and an unwavering dedication to the rule of law. Her record of fairness, consistency, and balance will have a stabilizing effect on the highly politicized Supreme Court.

We applaud the Senate for confirming Judge Jackson to the Supreme Court and look forward to her leadership.
