SAN FRANCISCO – After a 10-year legal battle, San Francisco civil rights nonprofit Equal Rights Advocates and client Maria Bojorquez have reached a settlement of her longstanding lawsuit against facilities management giant ABM Industries, stemming from her rape by a supervisor on the job.

In 2012, a San Francisco jury awarded Bojorquez $812,001, agreeing that she had been raped by her supervisor that night in 2004, and that she was retaliated against by ABM when she reported.

The case made headlines and drew attention to the epidemic of sexual violence against low-wage women workers in the janitorial industry, with Bojorquez’s story featured prominently in the Frontline documentary, Rape on the Night Shift, which aired on PBS stations nationally this summer.

In a recent national survey, 32% of working women say they have experienced sexual harassment at work, and 70% of those women never reported it, citing fear of retaliation from their employer.
