Family Voices and a Women’s Agenda for Gender, Racial, and Economic Justice

As we reimagine what our country will look like on the other side of this pandemic, and plan for a future bolstered by policies that safeguard against inequity, it is important that we hear from breadwinners from families of color, particularly women. To inform our Women’s Agenda for Gender, Racial and Economic Justice, Equal Rights Advocates conducted groundbreaking research in 16 cities that will pave the road ahead.

Initiative Purpose

We are living in a time with extraordinary challenges, from Congressional stalemates on policy reforms needed by millions to a Supreme Court intent on destroying voter, reproductive, and other fundamental rights. COVID-19 exposed the unfinished work of our movement, pushing from the workforce millions of women without adequate protection and support. Dozens of states have passed laws to further disenfranchise voters of color and threaten our democracy. The time is now to overhaul our work and care infrastructures and flex our power as workers and voters.

As we advocate for workers and organize communities, we see opportunity. With our Women’s Agenda Initiative, we will take advantage of that opportunity. This Initiative combines bold policy reform, impact litigation and legal enforcement, research, and organizing to build the economic security and power of women, families, and communities of color across the nation.

This is a moment for radical recovery and rebuilding. Our country is at a tipping point, requiring us to transform the structures not serving our communities and to reinvest in core values, community needs, and policy priorities. We listened to breadwinners from families of color, particularly women, to understand what is needed in this moment and beyond.

The Family Voices Amplified Survey will inform our Women’s Agenda for Gender, Racial, and Economic Justice. Since 2015, in coalition with diverse partners, we have passed 35 new laws affecting 30 million people as we center communities of color and others most impacted by racial, gender, and economic inequities.
